USVI Governor Acknowledges Indigenous Language Decade

U.S. Virgin Islands (UCTP Taino News) - Governor Albert Bryan Jr. of the U.S. Virgin Islands issued a proclamation on August 25, 2025 to recognize the United Nations International Decade of the World's Indigenous Languages, 2022 - 2032. The Governor noted that that "languages played a crucially import part of people's lives". Governor Bryan also called in Virgin Islanders to reflect on the lives of Indigenous Peoples, and "their culture, and their essential roles in the American and Virgin Islands heritage narratives." The proclamation also highlights the Indigenous language related work of Opia Taíno International and the United Confederation of Taíno People, as well as the Guainía Taíno Tribes of the Virgin Islands and Borikén and the Kalinago Nation.
