Businessman Jose Gonzalez Freire and the town of Arecibo in Puerto Rico are planning to erect a 295 ft statue of Christopher Columbus by 2015. For Indigenous Peoples throughout the Americas, Columbus is a symbol of Genocide, not a hero to be celebrated. We call on Jose Gonzalez Freire, Arecibo Mayor Carlos Molina, and Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla to abandon this project.
