United Nations International Day of the World’s Indigenous Women and Girls

The United Confederation of Taíno People pauses in its work to commemorate the United Nations International Day of the World’s Indigenous Women and Girls, observed annually on September 5.

This day honors the leadership, knowledge, resilience, contributions, and rights of Indigenous women and girls around the world. It also calls attention to the discrimination, violence, and other challenges they continue to confront while recognizing their essential roles in sustaining Indigenous families, communities, cultures, languages, and relationships with the natural world.

The UCTP extends its appreciation to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) for including two women of the Guainía Taíno Tribe, Lourdes "Kalichi'naru" Lebron and Michelle "Bibiahani" Marti Lopez, in its 2026 social media campaign highlighting the day. Their inclusion affirms that Taíno women are part of the living and continuing story of the world’s Indigenous Peoples.
