Bogota, Colombia (UCTP TaÃno News) - The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) held a meeting with regional Indigenous Peoples leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean in Bogota, Columbia from 31 August - 2 September, 2024. IFAD is an international financial institution and specialized United Nations agency based in Rome, the UN's food, and agriculture hub. On behalf of the United Confederation of Taino People, Tai Pelli, attended and represented issues and concerns from an insular Caribbean perspective at the gathering. IFAD has scheduled several regional meetings with Indigenous Peoples ahead of a global Indigenous Peoples Forum that will take place in February 2025.
At this regional meeting, Indigenous Political Advocates/Delegates were chosen for the upcoming Global Meeting. In an historic moment, Tai Pelli was selected for the Continental and Insular Caribbean Indigenous Peoples. Tai Pelli also participated in online consultations ahead of the meeting in Colombia. Pelli gained related experience in this area serving as a Global Indigenous Peoples Representative the Civil Society and Indigenous Peoples’ Mechanism (CSIPM) for relations with the United Nations Committee on World Food Security (CFS).
IFAD developed an Indigenous Peoples policy in 2009 and updated it in 2022. The policy recognizes Indigenous Peoples as equal partners in co-creating strategies, as stewards of natural resources and biodiversity, and as bearers of rich knowledge systems.
