Geneva, Switzerland (UCTP Taino News) – The 17th Session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) took place in Geneva, Switzerland from 8-12 July 2024. The annual meeting focused on issues such as previous reports and studies on the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; enhancing the participation of Indigenous Peoples in the United Nations; among others. On behalf of the United Confederation of Taíno People, Tai Pelli attended and participated throughout the session, as well as in related pre-session activities.
Pelli noted “It is important we participate in any and every space where the Rights of Indigenous Peoples are being addressed. Especially in spaces of political incidence/advocacy.” Pelli presented several statements/interventions to the UN Body including a joint statement with the International Indian Treaty Council.
One of the UCTP’s recommendations regarding how States are upholding the rights of Indigenous Peoples in non self-governing and unincorporated territories was included in EMRIP's final report to the Human Rights Council. Pelli also participated in the Indigenous Peoples Caucus preceding the EMRIP meeting and Side Event by the International Indian Treaty Council (IITC) on Thursday, July 11 focusing on "Conservation Funders and rights-based principles for their ethical engagement. The Confederation is an affiliate of the IITC.
The UCTP also supported Tai Pelli’s participation as a trainer for an in-person training for the Expert Mechanism, which was organized by the Project Access Indigenous Partnership before the 17th EMRIP Session began. UCTP interventions are available for review at the Confederation's website.
