Bronx Community Honors the Life and Legacy of Danny Chervoni

Bronx, New York (UCTP Taíno News) — More than 200 relatives, friends, neighborhood residents, and community supporters recently gathered at Brook Park in the South Bronx for a street-naming ceremony and cultural celebration honoring the life and legacy of beloved community member Daniel “Danny” Chervoni.

The intersection of East 141st Street and Brook Avenue, adjacent to Brook Park, has officially been co-named Daniel “Danny” Chervoni Way. The designation was enacted through New York City Local Law 48 of 2026. Danny served for many years as Brook Park’s head gardener and park manager and was widely respected as an educator, artist, healer, mentor, and dedicated steward of the land. Through his work, he helped make Brook Park a place where young people, families, cultural organizations, and neighborhood residents could reconnect with the earth and with one another.

The gathering reflected the many communities Danny welcomed and supported throughout his life. Members of the Kasibahagua Taíno Cultural Society, led by Kasike Múkaro Borrero, shared Taíno songs, music, and dance in his honor. Cultural presentations were also offered by a Mexica dance group and a bomba ensemble led by Kaila Brule. The event was supported in part by the United Confederation of Taíno People and South Bronx Unite.

For the Taíno community, the naming of Daniel “Danny” Chervoni Way carries special significance. Danny was not only a beloved member of the broader South Bronx community but also a fierce advocate for Taíno cultural expression at Brook Park. The garden has hosted Taíno children’s areítos, Indigenous Peoples’ gatherings, educational activities, and ceremonies connecting culture with the land. His friendship helped ensure that Taíno people had a welcoming place to gather, teach, sing, dance, plant, and strengthen community. Kasike Múkaro Borrero, UCTP President, stated: "Although Danny has walked on, his spirit remains present in the garden he cared for, in the lives he touched, and now in the name carried at the corner of East 141st Street and Brook Avenue.
