UN Headquarters, NY (UCTP Taíno News) – The annual United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues is being held at United Nations Headquarters from 15-26 April 2024. Indigenous leaders and advocates from around the world are attending the 23rd session under the theme ‘Enhancing Indigenous Peoples’ Right to Self-determination in the Context of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples: Emphasizing the Voices of Indigenous Youth’. The United Confederation of Taíno People (UCTP) is being represented at the meeting, as it has every year since Forum's establishment. The Forum session will discuss the six mandated areas of the Permanent Forum (economic and social development, culture, environment, education, health, and human rights), with reference to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In addition to the plenary sessions focusing on these themes, many side events will be held on and around the UN campus during the session.
United Confederation of Taíno People (UCTP) President, Kasike R. Múkaro Borrero was invited to be a featured speaker at a Forum side event entitled Grassroots Strategies for the International Decade on Indigenous Languages on April 17, 2024. The event was organized by the Global Indigenous Languages Caucus. Borrero introduced the recently published “Gu’ahia Taíno – We Speak Taíno: A Classic Taíno Dictionary and Grammar Guide.” The book, currently available in a Taíno/English version, was authored by Kasike (Chief) Borrero in collaboration with the UCTP’s Taíno Language Committee. As Borrero explained the book contains history, a verifiable lexicon of Taíno words and phrases, as well as introductory grammar information. He also announced that the Taíno/Spanish edition would be available later this year.
The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) established the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in July 2000 to advise the UN system on Indigenous Peoples’ issues.
