In the context of the Second Decade of the World’s Indigenous People, UNICEF celebrated June 28-29, 2007, in Georgetown, Guyana its first Meeting on the Rights of Indigenous and Maroon Children in the Caribbean.  This meeting was considered a significant first step to follow-up on the Permanent Forum’s recommendation that specifically mentions the Caribbean as a region where more attention needs to be given to indigenous issues.  The United Confederation of Taino People was invited by UNICEF to participate in the meeting and contribute to the final summary report. A part of our overall strategy with regard to Nation building, UCTP participation within international forums addresses policy development issues and provides additional platforms for recognition.

The United Confederation of Taino People (UCTP) submitted this intervention on Indigenous Languages to the Expert Group Meeting organized by the Secratariate of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. The submission was incorporated in the meetings final and official report. The UCTP was the only Caribbean Indigenous representative body to submit an intervention on this Issue. The following report was presented at the INDIGENOUS THEMATIC PLANNING CONFERENCE FOR WSIS TUNISIA in MARCH 17-18, 2005, OTTAWA, CANADA. The conference was a follow-up to the 2003 WORLD SUMMIT ON THE INFORMATION SOCIETY (WSIS) AND GLOBAL FORUM ON INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AND THE INFORMATION SOCIETY. The United Confederation of Taino People presented a Caribbean Indigenous perspective on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) at a panel focusing on "Indigenous Media & Arts and Connectivity".  A part of our overall strategy with regard to Nation building, UCTP participation within international forums addresses policy development issues and provides additional platforms for recognition.

This is the United Confederation of Taino People's 2003 Intervention on Culture submitted to the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. The UCTP states its position on sacred places, burial sites, and community participation. In this presentation the UCTP officially comends the sucessful repatriation of Taino ancestral remains back to Cuba. The 23 January 2008 Taino Report to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) was a joint effort of the United Confederation of Taino People - Office of International Relations and Regional Coordination; the Consejo General de Tainos Borincanos; and the Caney Quinto Mundo in response to periodic reports of the United States of America, which were reviewed at the Committee’s Seventy-second session held in Geneva, 18 February - 7 March 2008. The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) is the body of independent experts that monitors implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of Alls Forms of Racial Discrimination by its State parties. The report is one of the most comprehensive presentations on this situation to date (30 pgs in English only).

This report by the Caney Quinto Mundo entitled “Sacred Sites and the Environment from an Indigenous Perspective: Taino” was presented on May 19, 2006 at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues at an event sponsored by Yachay Wasi and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The report was supported by the United Confederation of Taino Peope and it provides a basis for understanding the process and situation which has led Taino to the PFII to an international forum to present these issues.
