Florida town to reconsider vote on island naming
Monday, 20 February 2012

Indiatlantic, Florida (UCTP Taino News) – On Tuesday, February 21, the Town Council of Indiatlantic will reconsider its vote to support the proposal to name a barrier island after Spanish Conquistador Juan Pone de Leon.  While there is no indication that the Council is supporting an alternative proposal to name the island “Ais Island”, the Council will vote to rescind or not its earlier support of Ponce de Leon.  The Ais (Ah-EE-s) were the original indigenous people of the area. In a communication to the Indiatlantic Council, the United Confederation of Taino People is “urging Council members” to vote “no for the Ponce de Leon” proposal.  A reversal vote by Indiatlantic would constitute 6 of the 8 area towns that have said no or refused to consider the naming.
