Proclamation
Whereas:
THE TAINO
PEOPLE having their ancestral cultural heritage originating in the Circum-Caribbean
Basin in BorikŽn (Puerto Rico), and the Greater and Lesser Antilles, the Bahamas,
Bimini (Florida), and the Northern Coastal area of South America and the Yucatan
Peninsula, now find themselves in its Diaspora throughout the entire world;
And
Whereas:
THE TAINO
PEOPLE have determined to secure the blessings bestowed by the Creator and
with Respect for our Mother Earth, have made decisions and taken positive
steps to protect, defend, and preserve the Ta’no cultural heritage and spiritual
traditions; And
Whereas:
THE TAINO
PEOPLE have diligently endeavored to promote dialogue which would further
the understanding about the delicate balance between people and nature, the
respect for the family and the ethic of sharing; And
Whereas: Today is
set aside to recognize the individuals and the organizations who in 1998,
with the formation of the United Confederation of Ta’no People, made a concerted
effort toward an independent action to correct past misconceptions, to improve
present circumstances and overcome past difficulties, so their lives can be
more productive and enjoyable; Now therefore

it Resolved:
That
I, Jose Rivera, as Councilman from the City of New York and by the powers
vested in me by the charter of the City of New York hereby proclaim the twenty
seven day of March nineteen hundred ninety-eight as the
United Confederation
of Taíno People Day
in the City of New
York
In
Witness Whereof, I
have hereunto set my hand and cause the Seal of the Council of the City of
New York to be affixed the twenty-fifth day of March in the year of our Lord
nineteen hundred ninety-eight.
